Police Levy FAQ

Police Levy FAQ

Is this a new levy?

No, this a renewal of the current levy, with small (0.2 mil) increase to cover the current costs of police services as compared to the costs of these same services when the current contract was executed five years ago.

What is the cost of the contract with the Medina Police Department?

  • The annual cost for police services with the Medina Police Department is $400,000.
  • This fee is guaranteed for the entire term of five years and will NOT increase.
  • If the levy passes, it will fully fund the cost of dedicated police services.
  • The 0.2 mil increase equates to only an approximate $7.00 per year for every $100,000 of valuation on a home.  Please visit the Medina County Auditor’s website at https://www.medinacountyauditor.org/ for more information on millage.

What will the Medina Police Department provide?

If the levy passes, the Medina Police Department will:

  • Continue to provide 24-hour-a-day/seven-day-a-week coverage for Lafayette Township.
  • Maintain dedicated officers and cruisers in Lafayette Township and/or the southwest portion of the City of Medina.
  • Ensure that responses to all calls can continue to be made in a timely manner.
  • Provide police assistance to fire/EMS calls and minimize response time.
  • Conduct vacation watches for Lafayette Township residences.
  • Have quick access to additional resources – an average of six Medina Police Department officers are on patrol during all shifts.
  • Utilize their intimate knowledge of Lafayette Township – familiarity with the township over the last five years, and many Medina Police Department officers reside in the township!

What will happen if the levy fails?

If the levy does not pass:

  • Lafayette Township will lose our current 24-hour-a-day/seven-day-a-week DEDICATED coverage.
  • There would be only minimal if any, Law Enforcement assistance on Fire/EMS calls.
  • The Medina County Sheriff would be responsible for all police services consisting of only general county-wide coverage.
  • The Medina County Sheriff would not be able to provide dedicated resources to Lafayette Township.
